The Unseen Lesson of the Empty Jar

A Curious Experiment in a Classroom

The Unexpected Visitor

In a small town, there was a philosophy teacher known for his unique teaching style.

One day, he came to a primary school. But instead of entering through the usual door like everyone else, he surprised everyone.

He walked into the classroom with shining eyes and an empty glass jar in his hand, and the children became very curious the moment they saw him.

The Mystery of the Stones

The teacher standing in front of us looked mysterious. We could tell right away that this was not going to be a usual class.

He placed the jar on the table and then took out a few big stones, each about the size of a person’s fist.

Is the Jar Full?

One by one, the professor carefully placed the stones into the jar until no more could fit.

He then turned to the class and asked, “Is this jar full?” The students, seeing the jar packed with stones, confidently nodded and answered, “Yes.” But the professor wasn’t finished yet.

The Pebbles Find Their Place

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar, shaking it lightly until they all fit snugly between stones.

He then turned to the class and asked, “Is this jar full?”

The students nodded and confidently answered, “Yes,” because they saw the jar was full of stones.

The professor wasn’t done, though.

Sand Fills the Gaps

Smiling, the professor produced a bag of sand. Slowly, he poured the sand into the jar, letting it slip into the remaining spaces between the stones and pebbles.

For the third time, he asked, “Is the jar full now?” This time, the students were more cautious.

Some hesitantly answered, “Probably not.”

Water Completes the Lesson

Finally, the professor pulled out a jug of water and poured it into the jar. The water soaked through the sand, filling every last gap. “Now,” he said, “the jar is full.”

The Stones of Life

Looking around at the wide-eyed students, the professor explained.

“This jar represents your life. The stones are the big, important things – your family, your health, your friends. Even if everything else was lost, if you had these, your life would still be full.”

The Pebbles and the Sand

“The pebbles,” he continued, “are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, your car. The sand represents the small, trivial stuff – the little things.”

“If you put the sand or pebbles in the jar first, there’s no room for the stones.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time on the small stuff, you won’t have room for what truly matters.”

Prioritise What Matters Most

The professor paused to let his message sink in. “The stones are your foundation. They are what’s most important – your loved ones, your health, your dreams. Don’t let the smaller things take up all the space.”

An Insightful Question

Just then, a curious student raised her hand and asked, “But professor, what about the water? Where does that fit in?”

The professor smiled, his eyes gleaming, and replied, “Ah, the water! That represents the small joys in life.

It’s the cup of coffee with a friend, the unexpected laughter, the little moments of connection and relaxation.”

Finding Room for Joy

“No matter how busy life gets, there’s always room for these moments. Even when your jar feels full, there’s always space for joy, for love.”
