The Tea That Broke a Heart

In my long years of work, I have seen many people, many situations. Some memories stay with us, not because they are big, but because they touch our heart.

Let me tell you about a colleague of mine. His name was Raghavan.
He was a simple man from a small village. Very honest. Very sincere in his work. He came to the office early every day, did his duties quietly, and never spoke loudly to anyone. He was the kind of person who smiled softly and respected everyone.

One day, our department had arranged a cultural program in the town hall. Many of us attended. During the break, they served tea in paper cups. Raghavan also took a cup of tea and came back to sit.

As he was settling in his seat, someone behind him brushed past.
The tea shook and a few drops fell on the shirt of Menon Sir, a senior officer who was seated in front. A senior respected officer, known for his discipline and strong personality.

Raghavan immediately bent forward and said very softly,
“Sir, I am very sorry… it slipped. Truly by accident.”

Menon Sir looked back, wiped the small stain, and replied,
“It’s alright. Nothing to worry. Please sit.”

But Raghavan could not rest.

His heart kept turning the small incident into a big mountain.
He thought:
“What if Sir thinks I was careless? What if he thinks I don’t know manners? What if he feels insulted?”

Even after going home, the worry did not leave him.

Next morning, he wore his cleanest shirt and went to Menon Sir’s office to apologize again.

“Sir, about yesterday’s tea… I only wanted to say I did not mean—”

Menon Sir got slightly irritated,
“I already said it is fine. Why are you repeating this?”

But Raghavan still could not let it go.

The following day, he went again.
His voice was trembling.

“Sir, please believe me, I would never disrespect you…”

This time, Menon Sir lost patience.

He raised his voice,
“I said enough! Leave now!”

My friends, I still remember how Raghavan looked when he came out of that room.
His face was pale.
He looked like his heart had cracked.

He went home early that day.
He lay down to rest…

…and he never woke up again.

The doctors said it was a heart failure.
But I believe it was a heart too gentle to carry so much worry.

What I Want You to Learn

We must be kind to others.
But we must also be kind to ourselves.

Sometimes, small accidents happen.
People forget and move on.
But we hold the pain inside, and that pain can destroy us.

Please remember:

  • Do your best.
  • Be sincere.
  • But do not punish yourself for every small mistake.
  • The world forgives more than we think.
  • The heart breaks faster than we realise.

Take care of your own heart, my young friends.
It is the only place where your life truly lives.
