The Basket That Could Not Hold Water

The Basket That Could Not Hold Water

One evening, a student approached his guru with a troubled look.

“Master,” he said, lowering his voice,
“I read every day. I read carefully.
But when someone asks me what I read… my mind goes blank.
Why does nothing stay?”

The guru did not answer.

Instead, he handed the student a basket,
old, rough, and full of holes.

“Go to the river,” the guru said quietly.
“Fill this basket with water and bring it back.”

The student stared at the basket.
Still, he obeyed.

He dipped it into the river.
The basket filled… and emptied at the same time.
Before he could take a few steps, the water was gone.

He returned, embarrassed.

“Go again,” said the guru.

The student went again.
And again.
Each time, the basket came back empty.

Finally, frustration spilled out.

“Master, this makes no sense!
The water never stays.
This basket is useless.”

The guru leaned forward and asked only one question:

“Is it?”

He pointed to the basket.

The student looked closely.
Something had changed.

The basket that was once dark and dusty
was now clean.
Fresh.
Almost shining.

The guru spoke softly:

“The water did not remain.
But it passed through.”

Then he said,

That is what reading does.
Not everything stays as memory.
But every page you read passes through your mind,
washing away dust,
sharpening thought,
quietly shaping who you become.”

The student fell silent.

He had come worried about forgetting.
He left understanding something deeper.

Sometimes,
the real change is not what you remember,
but what you become while reading.
