Echo and Narcissus: Stories of Greek Mythology

Stories of Greek Mythology: Echo and Narcissus

Long before cities filled the land with noise and stone, the world was softer and quieter. Forests whispered to those who listened. Rivers sang as they flowed. Mountains echoed every sound. Alongside the great Olympian gods, many other immortal beings lived close to nature. These were the nymphs, spirits of trees, water, hills, and caves. They laughed, wandered, and watched over the living world. Some guided the wind, some guarded springs, and others watched over forests. Alongside them were the Muses, who taught humans song, poetry, and dance.

Among them lived a nymph named Echo.

Echo lived on Mount Cithaeron, where tall trees stood close together and every sound returned gently through the woods. Echo had a beautiful voice, and she loved to use it. From morning till night, she sang, told stories, and made up poems. Her words flowed easily, full of rhythm and music. But Echo had a weakness; she loved to talk too much, and she often mixed truth with imagination, so no one knew where one ended and the other began.

Her sisters grew tired.

“You never stop talking,” one sighed.
“And you always want the last word,” another said.

Echo smiled brightly.
“All my stories are true,” she said.

“Even the ones that aren’t?” her sisters asked.

“Oh yes,” Echo laughed. “Especially those.”

Words can delight, but when they lose honesty, they slowly lose trust.

Hera’s Curse

One quiet afternoon, Hera, queen of the gods, walked through the shaded woods of Mount Cithaeron. She was not enjoying the beauty around her, for she was searching for her husband, Zeus, who often wandered where he should not.

When Hera met Echo, she stopped.

“Nymph,” Hera said sharply, “have you seen Zeus?”

Echo’s eyes lit up. At last, someone important wanted to hear her speak.

“Well,” she began, “first there was a breeze, and then a bird flew past, and then, ”

Hera’s patience faded.

“Nymph!” she snapped. “Tell me where my husband is, or I will silence that tongue forever!”

Echo froze.

With a flash of divine power, Hera spoke a curse.

“From this moment,” Hera declared, “you shall never speak your own words again. You may only repeat the last words spoken to you.”

Echo tried to cry out, but only Hera’s words came back to her.

Her voice was no longer hers.

A gift, when misused, can become a punishment.

A Beautiful Stranger

Not long after, a young man named Narcissus wandered into the forest. He was so beautiful that people often stopped just to stare at him. Many admired him, and many loved him. But Narcissus never returned that love. He admired only himself.

Echo saw him from behind a tree.

Her heart leapt.

She wanted to speak, to greet him, to tell him how she felt, but the curse held her silent. She followed him quietly, hoping he would speak first.

Suddenly, Narcissus heard a sound.

“Who’s there?” he called.

“Who’s there?” Echo replied at once.

“I’m here,” Narcissus said, confused.

“I’m here!” Echo cried happily.

“Come here,” he said. “Let’s talk.”

“Let’s talk!” Echo answered, running toward him.

When Narcissus saw her, his excitement vanished.

“Oh no,” he said quickly. “Please, stay away.”

“Stay away,” Echo whispered, her heart sinking.

“I don’t want to be cruel,” Narcissus said impatiently, “but this happens all the time. Everyone I meet says they love me.”

“Love me,” Echo repeated softly, clinging to the words.

Love that cannot speak its own heart becomes longing instead.

The Pool of Reflection

Narcissus turned and ran. Echo followed, calling out what little she could.

“You’ll never be happy with me!” he shouted.

“Happy with me?” she echoed desperately.

As Narcissus ran, he kept looking back and did not see the steep slope ahead. He slipped, rolled down the slope, and landed beside a small, still pool of water.

Breathing hard, he leaned forward to drink.

And stopped.

A face stared back at him, more beautiful than any he had ever seen.

“Hello,” he whispered.

The face moved, but made no sound.

He leaned closer. The face disappeared.

“No!” he cried, racing around the pool until he saw it again.
“There you are,” he said softly, lying down so he could look longer.

Echo arrived and sat nearby, watching.

“There you are,” she repeated, hopeful.

Love Turned Inward

“You are so beautiful,” Narcissus whispered.

“So beautiful,” Echo agreed.

“I have never loved anyone like this.”

“Like this,” she echoed.

“I want to stay with you forever.”

“Forever,” Echo murmured.

Night passed. Then another day. Narcissus did not move. He would not eat or drink. Echo would not leave him. Slowly, both grew weaker.

“You are still here,” Narcissus whispered.

“You are still here,” Echo answered.

He reached for the water again, but the face slipped away.

“Do not leave me,” he murmured.

“Leave me,” Echo repeated, and fell silent, ashamed of the words she could not change.

The Final Blessing

High above, Zeus watched and felt a rare heaviness in his heart.

“This is not love,” he said quietly. “This is loneliness turned inward.”

He sent a gentle blessing down to the quiet pool.

Narcissus looked once more into the water. His voice was barely a breath.

“I love you,” he whispered.

This time, the face did not answer.

His body faded gently, as if becoming part of the reflection itself. Where he had been, a small golden flower appeared, its head bent forever toward the water.

Echo felt herself fading, too. Her feet no longer touched the ground, and her hands no longer felt the air. Only her voice remained, drifting softly through the trees.

“I love you,” she whispered again and again.

And so, in the forest,
one became a flower that could never look away,
and the other became a voice that could never speak first.

Love must reach outward to live.
When it turns only toward itself, it slowly disappears.

Quiet Reflection

Pride listens only to itself.
Love listens to another.
And only one of them can truly last.
